The Goa government has formally notified its flagship Ujjwala Scheme, under which eligible households will receive financial assistance equivalent to the cost of three LPG cylinders annually.
The scheme will be launched on Saturday by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who will distribute application forms and launch a grassroots awareness campaign through video-conferencing. He will also brief panchayat representatives on implementation.
The scheme fulfils a key promise made by the ruling party ahead of the 2022 Assembly elections. Officials said registered applicants will receive Rs 3,000 directly in their bank accounts by September 10. The government has earmarked Rs 100 crore for the scheme.
Unlike the earlier subsidy scheme, there is no income ceiling, but only one member of each household can avail of the benefit. Panchayat members and self-help group volunteers will assist applicants with Aadhaar, voter identity cards, bank passbook, LPG consumer book and latest house tax document. The government expects the scheme to reduce the burden of rising cooking gas costs.
