Cuncolim Municipal Council became the first Civic body in the state to identify street vending zones and to allot the vendors identity Cards and certificates to carry on their business in the Municipal area.
A total of 117 vendors have been identified by the Civic body, of which around 100 vendors were handed over their certificates and the ID cards by Chief Officer Shankar Gaonkar in the presence of ME Vinay Dessai, Councilor Succorina Coutinho and others.
The Chief Officer told the media that that Cuncolim municipality on Tuesday became the first civic body in the state to complete the exercise of identifying the vending zones and to hand over the ID cards and the certificates to the vendors. “The Committee that was set up by the civic body has identified around 117 vendors. The committee headed by Cuncolim PI Sudesh Naik has also identified vending zones where the vendors are allowed to conduct business with time restrictions,” Gaonkar said.
Major vending zones have been set up at the market area, near the IDC and the pharmacy junction, where the bakers sell the bread and bakery items. The area near the KTC bus stand has also been identified as a vending zone, but only in the evenings.
The Cuncolim market has been identified as a vending zone on Sundays for vendors to carry out their business. “We have carried out the exercise as per the guidelines of Goa Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street vending and licensing) scheme, 2017,”the CO said.
Gaonkar also informed that vendors, who have been issued the ID cards and the certificates, have been told not to use plastic bags below 40 micron in size. “We have made it amply clear to the vendors that while they have got the right to conduct business in the vending zones, they should also shoulder the responsibility of ensuring that plastic bags below 40 micron size are not sold by them in the market,” he added.
