Instead, the ruling council has said that the civic body will take an appropriate decision only if the organisers of the DefExpo submit a formal request to accept the waste at the plant site.
Cuncolim Municipal vice-Chairperson Mario Moraes told The Goan that the civic body will not consider the request made by the garbage contractor to dump the DefExpo waste at the waste treatment plant run by the civic body. “We have informally discussed the issue amongst the councilors on Sunday and we have arrived at the conclusion that the civic body should not pay heed to the request made by the contractor,” Moraes said.
He, however, hastened to add that the civic body will take an appropriate call only in the event that the organisers of the DefExpo formally approach the council with a plea to accept the waste generated during the four-day event.
The issue over the DefExpo waste coming to the Cuncolim treatment plant had triggered a row with opposition councilor Ashok Phadte raising queries, whether waste from outside the municipal jurisdiction can be allowed to be dumped at the waste treatment plant.
Phadte had also raised the question whether it would be appropriate to accept the waste generated at the DefExpo when the Cuncolim waste treatment plant is lying in the dumps for want of repairs
and maintenance.
