Amidst rising concerns in Goa that coal transportation through Mormugao Port Trust (MPT) may lead to increase in pollution, representatives of Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Goa State Council have said that there are a number of pollution free ways of handling coal.
These suggestions of CII-Goa will find their way in the white paper, which will be submitted to the state government in the first week of the new year 2018.
Speaking to reporters, Anthony Gaskell, Convenor, CII Goa Logistics Panel, said, "The coal pollution, which occurs due to the transportation of coal can be suppressed by the use of lids on the wagons for coal transportation."
Atreya Sawant, Chairman, CII Goa State Council, said that coal is handled in a pollution-free manner in many European countries. This means that there is technology available to transport coal without contaminating the environment.
Atul Jadhav, Member, CII Goa State Council, said, "There are so many ways of avoiding pollution while handling coal. For example, discharge of coal from a ship can happen in midstream and from there it can be moved through barges on waterways."
Jadhav emphasized that even now coal is being transported from MPT through barges in Goa. He further said, "Coal pollution happens when coal is loaded and unloaded from one equipment to another.
"There is technology available where steam is generated at the time of coal loading/unloading. The steam thus generated provides a cover to coal dust and it helps in significantly reducing the pollution."
CII members said that no pollution will happen if lids are put on wagons while transporting coal through trains.
