Atreya Sawant, Chairman, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Goa State Council, has informed that CII is going to very soon urge the state government to have a logistics policy in place.
CII Goa had actually organised a logistics conference in July post which it has prepared a white paper based on the discussions and deliberations at the logistics conference. This white paper too will be submitted to the state government soon.
Anthony Gaskell, Convenor, CII Goa Logistics Panel, said, "There are a number of conclusions pertaining to logistics in the white paper.
"For example, we have said that a full-fledged logistics institute for youth should be established in Goa, the government should keep a certain percentage of land in the industrial estates for warehousing and conduct awareness campaigns to make people aware of new logistics projects happening the state."
There are a number of crucial infrastructural projects happening in Goa, which will have a far reaching impact on logistics like the upcoming Mopa Airport, third bridge over Mandovi and new container terminal in Balli.
Gaskell said, "Some of these are central government projects, some are state government projects. All these projects should come together and various agencies involved should coordinate so that logistics infrastructure of the state can be improved."
The members of CII-Goa also expressed hope that project of national waterways will considerably improve Goan rivers for the movement of cargo and people.
Sawant said, "We need proper dredging in the rivers so that barges can move 24 hours. As of now, we can move barges only when there is a high tide."
Atul Jadhav, Member, CII Goa State Council, said, "Once the stretches of rivers become national waterways, a lot of development can take place. For example, we can have jetties, which can handle different kinds of cargo. Moreover, the central government will invest in creating such infrastructure."
Jadhav even said that there is a huge opportunity for Goa to emerge as a logistics hub thanks to GST. He explained, "The central sales tax (CST) has been abolished now as GST has come into picture. Due to this, companies can build warehouses anywhere in Goa, as there are no tax related hassles."
The purpose of logistics policy will be to address all these issues and connect several elements of infrastructure within the state to make Goa a logistics hub.
