South Goa  district Collector and Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority, South Goa has directed the PWD Executive Engineer, (Bldgs.) to demolish the Indira Apartments at Sirvodem-Margao, to prevent any loss of life and property.

In another separate order Chief Officer of the Margao Municipal Council Madhu Narvkear has issued directions to vacant the premises within seven days, after concluding that the building is unsafe to occupy and the structure is dangerous, endanger the public at large and likely to fall.

The Collector’s order is based on a letter made by the MMC Chief Officer requesting her office to invoke the provisions of Disaster Management Act, informing that the building in question is totally in a dilapidated and dangerous condition. The Collector has further referred to the Goa Engineering College report, stating that the building is required to be reconstructed by demolishing the existing dilapidated structure. 

Since the  High Court had directed the District Disaster Management Authority to re-examine the matter, the Collector stated that a meeting of the South Goa District Disaster Management Authority was convened on 31.03.2026. “During the said meeting, it was decided that the conduct of the hearings in the said matter be delegated to Additional Collector-II, South Goa and Chief Executive Officer/Ex-Officio, Member, DDMA. Further, it was resolved that the Additional Collector-II, South Goa shall submit a detailed report proposing the action to be taken in the matter”, she stated.

In his report, the Additional Collector-II recommended that the Executive Engineer, PWD, WD-VIII (Bldgs) be directed to demolish the building by the name of Indira Apartments in order to prevent any loss of life and property.

The Collector further stated that another meeting of South Goa District Disaster Management Authority was held on 15.06.2026, wherein it was decided to accept and adopt the report of the Additional Collector -II, South Goa District and accordingly, demolish the building namely "Indira Apartments".

While issuing directions for the demolition of the building, the Collector directed that the entire cost of the demolition carried out by the PWD WD-VIII, shall be recovered from the owners of the building by the Mamlatdar of Salcete Taluka.

Incidentally, the Collector directed the Margao Municipal Chief Officer to  take all necessary measures to protect the interests of the tenants occupying any premises within "Indira Apartments".
