Government’s decision to roll back the process to declare 56 villages as urban areas as per the 2020 notification has been hailed by those opposing the move as a historic victory for the villages and identity.
Velim MLA Cruz Silva, who had taken up the issue concerning the villages of Sao Jose de Areal and Chinchinim, both falling in his Velim Constituency, termed the withdrawal of the recent government notification a historic victory for the villages, their identity, and the people’s voice. “This fight was worth it — a testament to the unity and determination of Goans who stood firm to protect their land and heritage’, he said.
Silva said village communities across Goa have spoken loud and clear: they demand a New Regional Plan that safeguards Goa’s land, rivers, hills, and fields — the lifeblood of our state. The people do not want their areas to be classified as urban, which would threaten the rural character, environment, and traditional livelihoods that define Goa’s soul, he said.
He added; “This victory belongs to every villager who raised their voice, every youth who joined hands, and every citizen who believed that Goa’s future must remain rooted in its natural and cultural, identity. Together we reaffirm that Goa’s villages are not for sale — they are our pride, our home, and our legacy."
Goa Forward Chief Vijai Sardesai said the government has officially withdrawn the controversial urban areas notification with immediate effect following the ultimatum issued by the regional party to mobilise villages across the state. “Let this be a reminder to never underestimate the voice of Niz Goemkars . Goa Forward will always fight to protect Goem, Goemkar and Goemkarponn”, he added.
