International Girl Child Day was observed at the South Goa district Collectorate on Friday with the district Collector, Ajit Roy underscoring the need to reverse the adverse sex ratio in the society.
Interacting with the media after flagging off an awareness rally taken out on the occasion of International Girl Child Day, the district Collector reminded that a girl child is the real treasure of the society, saying that today’s girl child is tomorrow’s mother while underlining the need to save the girl child and empowering them.
The rally was followed by a programme at the Ravindra Bhavan, Margao.
“India is affected by an adverse sex ratio, around 934 girls to 1,000 boys. The ideal situation is to have more girls than boys in the society which will help restore the sex ratio,” he added.
Roy pointed out that the situation can be rectified by bringing about sustained awareness in the society to save the girl child and empower them.
Additional Collector Prasanna Acharya, Deepali Naik were amongst the senior officials who were present at the rally flagging ceremony. A number of anganwadi workers, besides higher secondary and college students participated in the rally.
