Colva p’yat starts collecting waste strewn at Fama

MARGAO

The Colva panchayat on Saturday got its act together and began collecting the tonnes of plastic waste scattered all along the main road, which was left behind by the stalls during the Fama festivities.

Sarpanch Anthony Fernandes told the media that work on collection of the plastic and other waste has begun in the right earnest on Saturday. And, the Sarpanch has exuded confidence that the workers engaged by the panchayat to collect the waste will complete the exercise by Sunday.

“The workers have so far collected more than 20 bags of plastic waste. The exercise, which began in the morning, was underway till Saturday evening. Since the exercise is huge, we expect the workers to complete the task by Sunday,” he said.

Social activists and local residents had on Friday expressed concern that the plastic waste left behind along the main road, may find its way into the adjoining fields, if the authorities do not collect and dispose it on top most priority.
