In a bizarre incident, a number of small boxes containing the internal body parts taken out for examinations during biopsies were found dumped at the Verna plateau on Saturday.
The Maina-Curtorim police were quick to register an offence against unknown persons under section 269 of the IPC for indulging in a negligent act which is likely to spread infections.
District police chief, SP Arvind Gawas, exuded confidence of zeroing in on the hospital or medical institution involved in the act.
SP Gawas said that the boxes containing the internal body parts were dumped at an isolated place on the plateau and were found by some labourers working in the area. “As per the law, such medical waste is required to be incinerated or to be buried as per the law. But, this waste, which is of the year 2014, was disposed off in an open place in violation of the law,” he said.
To a question, SP Gawas pointed out that the police are investigating to find out whether a hospital or medical institution had directly disposed the waste or it was disposed by an outsourcing agency. “We are on the job to find out the institution involved in the offence,” he said, while exuding confidence of achieving a breakthrough. PI Vast said that the boxes had the names of many persons, whose biopsies were conducted by the hospital or medical institution, adding that the police will try and get to the source.
