With the second round of the engineering degree admission process at the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) coming to a close on Wednesday evening, the trend shows that Computer Engineering is the most sought-after engineering stream, displacing Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering (ETC), which was the first preference of students for years.
ETC is now the third-most sought-after stream, with Mechanical Engineering retaining its number 2 slot.
ETC is closely followed by Electrical Engineering, which is followed by Civil Engineering.
Information Technology (IT) Engineering comes in sixth, while Mining Engineering is in seventh position.
Mining Engineering, offered in Goa solely by the Goa Engineering College (GEC), has always been the least opted-for stream in engineering, with several seats going vacant every year.
At the end of the second round, only 50% of the mining seats have been filled at GEC, leaving 16 seats still open to students who wish to opt for the same.
Last year, 20 of the 32 available seats for Mining Engineering were filled.
Speaking on the change in trends, Pradeep Kusnur, the Deputy Director (Centralised Admission Division), DTE, said, “Computers is the most sought after stream in the degree as well as the diploma courses this year. This is in keeping with the national trend, as it is observed that computers is the most popular stream even at the IITs.”
Commenting on Mechanical Engineering retaining its second spot, Kusnur said, “Mechanical is an evergreen choice.” Kusnur also informed The Goan that even though the second round of admissions ended on Wednesday evening, there would be a spot round of admissions on Thursday morning. This is aimed at filling up the still-vacant seats.
“Those who had not applied earlier for any reason, and those who had applied late and whose applications were not considered, can come on Thursday morning to the DTE for spot admission,” said the deputy director.
Students who want to study engineering in Goa can choose one of the five engineering colleges in the state: GEC at Farmagudi, Padre Conceicao College of Engineering (PCC) at Verna, Don Bosco College of Engineering at Fatorda, Agnel Institute of Technology and Design (AITD) at Assagao, and Shree Rayeshwar Institute of Engineering and Information Technology (SRIEIT) at Shiroda, which students opt for in that order.
