Concerns over proposed amendment to road width

An awareness programme conducted by concerned citizens of Benaulim in collaboration with the Cana Benaulim panchayat on Saturday expressed concerns over the proposed amendment to the road width, fearing it would create a huge traffic load and put a strain on the basic infrastructure of every village community.

Architect Elsa Fernandes and Roshan Mathias, who were invited as resource persons, guided the participants on the draft amendments to the Goa Land Development and Building Construction (Amendment) Regulation 2022.

The interactive workshop was attended by villagers and elected representatives of Benaulim, and also of the surrounding villages, at Our Lady Of Patrocínio Chapel hall.

The resource persons explained the proposed amendments via a vis the old Act of 2010 bringing to light that the amendments will have a catastrophic effect on the infrastructure, demography and economy and a great impact on the environment of the villages and cities.

It was pointed out that the road width amendments would create a huge traffic load beside the pressure on the basic infrastructure of every village or community

They further pointed out that modifications in the regulations in agricultural zones and open spaces are a major concern as effects cultivable lands, land use and climate change impacts.

Participants were also interested to know the basis for the introduction of a special commercial business district with 400 FAR, demanding to know whether any surveys or studies were carried out before the introduction of this zone.
