Concerns over saline water seeping into homes as bundh breaches at Goa Velha

Concerns over saline water seeping into homes as bundh breaches at Goa Velha

OLD GOA
The Uddi locals of Goa Velha have expressed concerns over saline water seepage into their homes and wells due to the breach in the bundh, adjoining the tributary of the Zuari river.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, the locals claimed that such a breach never ever happened and laid blame on non-maintenance of the bundh.

“For decades, the bundh withstood all elements but now due to non-maintenance, the breach has occurred due to which the saline water gushed inside and the saline water nearly entered the homes of the locals,” said local panch Iyno D’Souza.

D’Sopuza demanded that authorities concerned repair the breach at the earliest so that the threat faced by the locals is prevented.

A local, Ashley, informed that due to the breach, the saline water has seeped into the homes as well as the wells thereby contaminating the same.

“Therefore, authorities concerned should repair the breach as during extreme high tide there is possibility of the saline water entering the homes,” he added.

When questioned, Goa Velha Sarpanch Andrew Pereira said the panchayat has already held an inspection of the breach and will write to the Collector to ensure that the breach is repaired at the earliest to prevent saline water from entering the homes of the locals.

“The Talathi has already submitted the inspection report to the Mamlatdar and we are hoping that work on repairs of the breach will begin at the earliest,” Pereira added.
