Concerns raised over reckless driving by domestic tourists

Aldona MLA Carlos Ferreira has called for stricter action against unruly tourists visiting Goa, saying the State does not need visitors who create trouble through reckless driving, abusive behaviour, and disrespect for local laws and culture.  

Reacting to a recent incident in North Goa involving occupants of a rented car who allegedly got into an argument with a taxi driver and local residents over a parking dispute before reportedly cutting short their holiday, Ferreira said such tourists were harming Goa’s image.  

“We have had enough of unruly tourists coming from other parts of India and showing off their wealth in Goa. Many come here and misbehave, drive recklessly, use abusive language, and think money gives them the right to act as they please,” Ferreira said.

The MLA said Goans value self-respect and dignity and expect tourists to show the same respect in return for the hospitality they receive.  

“If you come respectfully, we will respect you. That is how tourism has always grown in Goa. But if people cannot behave properly, then this is not the kind of tourism Goa wants or needs,” he added.  

Ferreira said Goa has traditionally attracted quality tourists, including international travellers and charter visitors, but warned that the behaviour of some domestic tourists was affecting the State’s reputation as a preferred holiday destination.  

He also raised concerns over reckless driving by tourists using rented vehicles, claiming that many ignore traffic rules. “I have personally seen tourists driving rented cars at high speed, taking dangerous turns, driving on the wrong side, and even making U-turns on the Atal Setu despite one-way traffic rules,” he said.  

Ferreira further alleged that some tourists involved in accidents try to settle matters by paying small amounts to victims, while the financial burden eventually falls on vehicle owners despite insurance cover.  

He warned that such incidents could discourage genuine tourists from visiting Goa and affect the State’s tourism industry.
