Confidential note bares drug, alcohol abuse among police

PANAJI

In a troubling revelation that has cast a shadow over Goa Police, the force, if not all, are addicted to substance abuse and gambling -- atleast as per a confidential note circulated within the department.

The note signed by Superintendent of Police (Headquarters) Nelson Albuquerque indicates the department is disturbed over the increase in alcohol and drug addiction among its personnel/officials.

“It has been reported that nowadays there is an increase in the number of alcohol and drug addicts among the police officials, thus spoiling their physical as well as mental health. The police stations/units, restrooms have become such a place that officers, as well as lower staff, consume alcohol and other drugs on duty and gambling is also a part of activities in police stations/units premises,” it stated.

In response to this alarming trend, the note “ issued on directions by Director General of Police Alok Kumar “ has directed Superintendents of Police of districts/units to hold surprise visits once a month and take action against the addict personnel.

“The SPs of district/units shall conduct surprise visits once a month and take action against such officials/personnel who are addicted to alcohol, drugs and gambling activities while on duty,” it stated.

All the in-charges of these respective stations and units are also asked to prepare a list of such officials and submit it to their respective SPs for necessary action.
