The beef which was confiscated by Panaji police on Monday has been disposed off in the premises of Goa Meat Complex (GMC) at Usgao.
Around 1,300 kilos of beef illegally transported from Belgaum to Goa was confiscated by police, but they could not find a suitable place to dispose it off in Panaji.
"The confiscated beef was disposed by Panaji police in our premises by taking proper care. We allowed it as our managing director had permitted police to dispose it off in our premises. We have taken all precautions to ensure that there is no foul smell at the site," Vishwas Gawas, engineer who has additional duty as in-charge of GMC, told The Goan.
Sources from GMC informed that the confiscated meat had been disposed off by digging a pit in the premises.
Panaji Police had arrested the driver of the vehicle which was found carrying the meat. The illegal transportation of beef came to light when the vehicle transporting the meat had met with an accident.
Panaji police had reportedly requested the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) to dispose off the seized meat. The CCP had provided an excavation machine, but officials could not find any suitable place to dispose off the confiscated meat. Authorities were then compelled to contact GMC officials, before disposing it off in the GMC premises.
