The Goa Pradesh Youth Congress (GPYC) leaders on Monday burnt an effigy of Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani, after accusing her of failing to take any action in the recent suicide of a Dalit student at Hyderabad University.

The leaders gathered near Quepem College bus stop and shouted slogans against the HRD minister and burnt her effigy to condemn her alleged indifference over the suicide case.

Speaking to the media, GPYC president Xavier Fialho said the protest was organised to condemn the indifference by HRD Minister Smriti Irani, to whom letters were written by students to readmit the five Dalit students, who were dismissed by the vice chancellor of Hyderabad University.

Rohith Vemula, one among the five dismissed, reportedly committed suicide, informed Fialho.

“False allegations were made against Rohith that he had beaten an ABVP leader. Despite request letters by students to admit the five Dalit students, the minister did not act on it. Hence, she is responsible for this unfortunate incident and the youth Congress will protest all over Goa against Irani,” said Fialho.

Dayesh Naik, Ahraj Mullah, Suleiman Khan, Jana Bhandari and others were present at the protest rally.
