Cong candidate vows to fight for dual citizenship

MARGAO
Congress candidate Capt Viriato Fernandes has said that he and the Congress party would fight in Parliament for the dual citizenship status for Goans affected by Portuguese citizenship.

Saying the Centre’s clarification on OCI status is not a permanent solution, Viriato said only dual citizenship for the people of Goa can be a permanent and lasting solution.

“The Congress had in the current session of Parliament had tabled a Bill to accord dual citizenship status for Goans. The Private Member’s Bill tabled by Congress Shashi Tharoor, however, was shot down by the ruling BJP. But, the fact that the Bill received a nod from the Parliament secretariat goes to show that the Bill had fulfilled the legal and Constitutional requirements,” he added.
