PANAJI: Lambasting the BJP for poaching their two MLAs, the Congress on Tuesday termed the development as 'Murder of Democracy' while not ruling out to claim its stake for forming the government. “We will prove our majority if we get an opportunity,” said Babu Kavlekar while addressing media persons in the city on Tuesday evening. He said that the BJP was desperate to hold on to power and did not want to democratically run a government.
The media briefing was called soon after the meeting of remaining 14 legislators of the Congress at the residence of Kavlekar following the resignations of two of their MLAs -- Subhash Shirodkar and Dayanand Sopte -- who joined the BJP on Tuesday morning. Kavlekar informed that all the remaining 14 MLAs of Congress were united.
Alleging that the BJP was making backdoor-entry using money and government machinery, he said the party had done the same in 2017 when it did not have the mandate. “Since the government is not a majority government, after one and a half year of tenure you can see there is no governance,” he said.
By taking away two MLAs, BJP has shown that they can go to any level to be in power, Kavlekar lamented. He claimed that the Congress was capable of proving its majority with the present number of MLAs. "Congress has requested the Governor to give us an opportunity to form a government as the government was not in majority, but we have not been given a chance to prove our majority," he alleged.
Kavlekar also claimed that both their MLAs either left the party under some pressure or for monetary gains."What incentives they (BJP) gave them or what kind of pressure they were subjected to, we do not know? they were talking to us until 11 pm," he said, further adding that the people who have elected them will teach them a lesson.

Ravi Naik claimed that many leaders from the ruling party are in contact with Congress and within six months the Congress will form government.
