MAPUSA
Stating that government authorities were dragging their feet in taking action against illegal landfilling, the Congress on Saturday demanded immediate action against illegal landfilling along the NH66 in Mapusa.
“It’s shocking that despite reporting to officials about the illegal landfilling activity, no action has been forthcoming. A huge area of agricultural land adjacent to the NH66 has been filled with rubble and mud and also levelled,” said Vijay Bhike, North Goa District Congress President.
The North Goa District Congress chief was addressing the media along with the other party members at the landfilled site.
Continuing, Bhike said the landfilling activity had apparently started some months ago but gathered pace more than a fortnight back.
“For the last four days, I have been calling up Sagar Gaude of the Flying Squad who has been ignoring my calls. The flying squad is supposed to be working for 24 hours, but here is an officer who refuses to take calls. How will the common man get justice?” he asked. He informed that the chief officer of the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) had written to the deputy collector on January 20 seeking “necessary action” against “illegal landfilling” of agricultural land but since no action was forthcoming, the CO wrote to the collector on January 24 on the issue.
