The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) on Friday demanded that the government put in efforts to allow the Sanjivani Sugar factory to run, instead of shutting it down on account of losses.
Congress spokesperson Amarnath Panjikar while addressing the press at the Congress headquarters, alleged that the government was not bothered about the welfare of the sugarcane farmers, and that the government’s attitude towards the farmers was painful to watch. “The government does not want to analyse why the factory in running into a loss, but just wants to give the excuse of loss to shut down the factory,” Panjikar said.
“What will be the future of these farmers if the factory closes? The Congress party demands that the government rethink its decision for the sake of the farmers,” he said.
Meanwhile, Panjikar said that several government corporations that were running into crores of loss were still allowed to run. “The government has incurred a Rs 30 crore loss with the Kadamba Corporation. Yet it’s still running. We condemn the government’s attitude towards the farmers, and ask that the government at least listen to the farmers’ views before a decision of such magnitude is made,” the Congress spokesperson said.
Govt prefers supporting Gujaratis over Goan farmers: Cong
PANAJI: Stating that the State government preferred supporting Gujaratis over Goans, the Congress slammed the government for allowing SUMUL (Surat District Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd) to reject thousands of litres of milk of Goan dairy farmers.
“We are with the dairy farmers and condemn the government for allowing SUMUL to harass our farmers,” said Panjikar.
Panjikar also said that one of the farmers whose milk had been rejected by SUMUL - Meghasham Raut from Bicholim, had been a dairy farmer for the last 17 years, and had been giving milk to SUMUL for the past two years, and now suddenly, it was rejected. “Why should the farmers keep quiet when they are facing injustice?”questioned Panjikar, adding that all the farmers and the Congress would continue raising their voices if the government carried on with injustice of this kind.
