Cong demands inquiry into lathi-charge on its workers

OLD GOA

GPCC President Girish Chodankar demanded that the government order an inquiry into the lathi-charge by the police on their workers during the ‘Mashal Rally’ on Wednesday.

Chodankar has also demanded the suspension of the police officer who gave the lathi charge orders.

He made the demands while speaking to reporters outside a private hospital in Corlim on Thursday, where he along with other office bearers had gone to pay a visit to Shahida Begum, who was injured in the lathi-charge.

Speaking to reporters, Chodankar condemned the government for using police to silence opposition.

“We demand that the government immediately order an investigation into the lathi charge on our workers and also suspend the officer who gave the orders,” Chodankar said.

“When Congress was ruling, we never ordered lathi-charge on protestors,” Chodankar informed, adding that the voice of people won’t be silenced by such lathi charge.

GPCC Vice President Sankalp Amonkar also demanded a probe into the lathi-charge on their workers.

Congress leader Varad Mardolkar said the police should be ashamed for having lathi-charged women whom they are supposed to protect.

“In 40 days, this is the second lathi-charge on Congress workers,” Mardolkar said.
