VASCO: Stepping up the tempo against the BJP, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Girish Chodankar on Saturday evening demanded the removal of Governor Dr Mridula Sinha, after alleging she was working for the BJP and not acting as per the constitution.
Chodankar was addressing a large gathering during the public meeting of the "Mormugao Taluka Jan Akrosh”, a taluka-wise programme organised by the Congress to question governance in Goa.
Other Congress leaders present at the meeting included Opposition Leader Chandrakant Kavlekar, former chief minister and Ponda MLA Ravi Naik, Saifulla Khan, M K Shaikh, Sankalp Amonkar and GPCC Mahila Chief Pratima Coutinho.
"We have been going to the governor since February with our demands to restore sanctity of governance in Goa. The governor is supposed to work as per the constitution and she is paid for this work and given all facilities.”
“However, the Governor is silently seeing all this injustice on the people of Goa and nothing is happening as per the constitution today.”
“The chief minister is not signing files and some others are signing on his behalf, there are no assembly sessions and there are no cabinet meetings. Who is supposed to act on this? The governor must step in during such crisis and play her role.”
“The Governor has paid no heed to these issues of governance and has become a liability to the State. She is not working as per the constitution, but is working for the BJP,” alleged Chodankar.
“She is being paid from the tax payers money to protect the constitution and the rights of common man and when she has worked for the BJP, why should we spend on her salaries and facilities?”
“Hence, she has failed to do her constitutional obligations and failed to perform her duties. We demand that the President of India immediately remove this governor,” Chodankar added.
The GPCC president said the people were upset with her attitude and added that the ministers were themselves claiming that the cabinet is not working.
“The governor should have acted on this, but she is doing nothing and we have practically stopped approaching the governor, who is of no use in such situations,” said Chodankar.
Mormugao Congress leader Sankalp Amonkar said the issue of coal pollution in the Mormugao taluka has been one of the major issues and held the Goa BJP responsible for it.
"The garbage issue is also a big issue plaguing residents of Sada. Funds are being received in crores but we do not know what is happening as the garbage is not yet cleared.”
“Workers of WISL are struggling while scrap is being taken after cutting the floating dock. Several households in Baina had applied for regularisation but the files have not been cleared for over a year now and are lying in the Dy Collector's office," said Amonkar.
Vasco Congress leader Saifullah Khan said Vasco had struggled for development.
"We don't have any facilities in the city and there is nothing that can attract tourists here. While the plans of a swimming pool in Vasco has gone down the drain, the place could have been used to develop some thing that could attract tourists.”
“We have several tourists who come by cruise or by the airport, but leave out of Vasco to explore tourism elsewhere in the State. We should have some things done to increase the amount of tourists visiting Vasco city so that the local business can grow," said Khan.
