Cong dissolves all its block committees

PANAJI

In its first organisational response to the en-masse desertion by eight of its 11 MLAs, the Congress in Goa announced that it dissolved all its existing block committees.

"The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee has dissolved all the Block Congress Committees with immediate effect," stated a two-line press release issued by party general secretary Sunil Kawthankar.

Kawthankar said the block committees will be reconstituted in "due course" by taking party workers into confidence in the respective blocks.

The action comes two days after eight of its eleven legislators, including Opposition Leader Michael Lobo and former chief minister Digambar Kamat, joined the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

The development forced AICC general secretary Dinesh Gundu Rao to leave the ongoing 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' led by Rahul Gandhi and rush to Goa, where he condemned on Thursday the BJP's blatant use of money to buy MLAs.

The decision to dissolve all the block committees was prompted by Rao, sources said.
