MARGAO
The Congress on Thursday braced up for Mission Shiroda with a single-point agenda to defeat congressman turned BJP Subhash Shirodkar in the by-election as the party almost succeeded in bringing together all the probable ticket aspirants at a round table meeting held in a Margao hotel Thursday evening.
While around 10 probà ble candidates had a meeting with the party top brass, it has also been reportedly decided to approach former BJP MLA Mahadev Naik and Tukaram Borkar with a plea to join the Congress with a single-point agenda to defeat Subhash Shirodkar.
Amongst the probable candidates who attended the meeting was Dr Subhash, who was given a membership form by South Goa District Congress president
Joe Dias.
Sources said these leaders who have not officially joined the Congress are expected to hand over their membership forms in the next few days.
The meeting assumed significance as it was attended by the Party top brass including AICC observer in charge of Goa Dr Chella Kumar, GPCC chief Girish Chodankar, Ponda MLA Ravi Naik and son Ritesh, Margao MLA Digambar Kamat, MLA Clafacio Dias and district president Joe Dias.
A senior leader said that all the probable candidates were unanimous in their opinion that they should remain united with the one-point agenda to defeat Subhash Shirodkar. “They have all vowed to work for the success of the party irrespective of the candidate,” the leader added.
This is perhaps the first time that the Congress leadership has managed to bring the probable candidates
together ahead of the
by-election.
