Confusion amongst the party rank and file over alliance with the Goa Forward and party’s decision to leave the Fatorda municipal area to the regional party in the civic elections earlier this year must have left the Congress workers high and dry in Fatorda, which was once the party’s stronghold around two decades ago.
Scheduled Tribe Leader, Luis Alex Cardozo, had thrice won from Fatorda in 1989, 1994 and 1999 before the party saw its downslide in the last 20 years. In fact, the Congress has not won from Fatorda since 2002 when the Lotus bloomed from the constituency for the first time that year.
Since then to date, the Congress has not come anywhere close to winning the seat, more so since 2012 when the party had to settle for the third place after the BJP.
Commenting on the exit of Fatorda Block President Piedade Norohna, Joseph Silva and others, GPCC Chief Girish Chodankar said the party leadership will take steps to strengthen the party in Fatorda.
When asked whether indecisiveness by the party leadership in clearing the air on alliance with Goa Forward and the party’s decision to leave Fatorda for Goa Forward in the Margao Municipal polls had left the party rank and file demoralized, Girish said that the party will have to look into all these aspects and rebuild the party organization.
He, however, said those who were having their legs in two boats have no place in the party. “There may be issues which need to be addressed. But, those who were having their legs in two parties certainly have no place in the Congress”, he added.
