Censuring the BJP government for making life difficult for a common man, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee, President Luizinho Faleiro on Sunday said the BJP government was against the people of Goa even as it pandered the business class.

“The rise in prices of essential commodities and hike in water and power tariff clearly indicates that the BJP is against Goans and actually helps the business class,” Faleiro said.

The GPCC president was addressing a massive Congress workers’ convention in Tivim in the presence of Rajya Sabha MP, Shantaram Naik, former panchayat minister, Babu Azgaonkar, General Secretary, Trajano D’Mello and former tourism minister, Nilkant Halarnkar who is likely to be the Congress candidate from Tivim.

As per rough estimate, over 1,500 people were present for the convention held in a hall in Assonora.

Speaking further, Faleiro said the BJP government mismanaged resources and created artificial shortage of essential commodities in the market.

“This has helped them to increase the prices of essential commodities and returns they get from this will be used in the forthcoming elections,” he alleged.

He said Congress will prepare a vision document and a manifesto. The party will also prepare a roadmap to reduce prices of essential commodities, he added.

“If Congress comes to power, we will roll back hike in water and electricity tariff carried out by the insensitive BJP government,” the GPCC president assured.

Labeling the BJP-led government as a government of U-turn, Faleiro said the party’s biggest U-turn was on Special Status for Goa.

“In the 2012 assembly polls, BJP had promised to deliver Special Status to Goa if elected to power. Now, the same party says it cannot do it,” he said.

He said the financial position of the State was very precarious. He said there was massive unemployment even as the government has been promoting casinos, prostitution and drugs.

Slamming the BJP-led government, MP, Shantaram Naik said when in opposition the party was screaming that mining scam was worth Rs 35,000 crore but when Manohar Parrikar became chief minister he found there was no scam.

He said the Investment Promotion Board was used as a spring board to make money.

He further said nationalization of rivers was not as per the Inland Waterways Act.

“People living near the rivers will lose land to the Centre and the State will have no say,” Naik said.

The Rajya Sabha MP said he has recommended Rs 90 lakh for upgradation of Tivim railway station and another Rs 20 lakh to build a gym in the constituency.

Several senior Congress leaders like Girish Chodankar, Pramod Salgaonkar , Amarnath Panjikar, Yatish Naik, Dayanand Sopte and other were also present.

The gadda mafia is back in the commercial capital once again. Around a month after an abortive attempt was made to install a new gadda at the pick up stand, two kiosks have come up near the KTC bus stand recently. The newly-painted kiosks have been installed along the roadside in front of the KTC canteen, with reports doing the rounds in the corridors of the Margao civic body that the development points accusing fingers at the powers that be behind the presence of the new…
