The need for extensive awareness among bike riders and consumers purchasing ISI mark helmets must be undertaken before enforcement, was the consensus at the special meeting held on Wednesday at the Conference Hall Police Headquarters Margao.
The special meeting was called by the South Goa District Road Safety Committee to discuss the need to tackle the sale of non-ISI mark helmets, fake helmets and consumer protection. The meeting was convened by Deputy Director Transport (South) Ivo Rodrigues as per the minutes of the last DRSC meeting held on February 6, 2021.
The meeting was attended by DySP Traffic (South) Prabodh B Shirvoikar, Department of Legal Metrology Assistant Controller Nitin P Purushan, DRSC Monitoring Cell member Lorna Fernandes, Department of Commercial Taxes State Tax Officer (Margao) Naresh K Gaude, Directorate of Industries, Trade & Commerce Deputy Director Prasad Volvoikar, Sub Inspector Civil Supplies Malla Reddy, Traffic Cell PI Gautam A Salunki, Fatorda Police Station PI Kapil Nayak and Maina-Curtorim Police Station PSI Vikesh.
GOACAN co-ordinator Roland Martins explained the urgency to deal with issues linked to the sale of ISI mark helmets as many consumers have complained that bills are not being provided, warranty cards are not stamped and in many cases, the sale is done without the packaging thereby the MRP is not displayed. He briefed the meeting about the Gazette dated November 26, 2020, on the "Helmet for riders of Two Wheelers Motor Vehicles (Quality Control) Order 2020" and the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) making the use of the ISI mark helmets compulsory from June 1.
After discussion, it was decided to focus on awareness and that relevant clarification be sought from the BIS Western Region office at Mumbai as well as the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways New Delhi.
