Education dept, DIET struggle for water in Porvorim

Education dept, DIET struggle for water in Porvorim

PORVORIM
A major problem in water supply has hit the education department and the nearby District Institution of Education and Training (DIET) at Porvorim and the issue is unlikely to be resolved soon.

Hundreds of employees at the education department and the DIET have been affected by acute water shortage for some time.

According to sources, the education department has to rely on PWD water tankers every day.

“We face a lot of hardship and are forced to bring water from home for drinking purposes,” lamented a staff member on condition of anonymity.

“Sometimes, the toilets are not cleaned properly on account of water scarcity and the stench is unbearable.”

A similar situation prevails at the DIET, located near the education department, which is also struggling for water supply.

Affected staff at the education department and DIET have feared that the water problem would only get worse when work on the Lekha Bhavan (accounts department) is completed and administrative work begins there.

When contacted, PWD (water) Assistant Engineer Deepak Borkar confirmed that the education department does not get sufficient water, since they get water from an old 20 mm pipeline.

“The education department is an old building and they are connected to the main pipeline near Mall de Goa. The small pipeline of 20 mm diameter, which is connected to the main pipeline at Mall de Goa, has rusted and needs to be replaced.”

“The PWD has taken steps to lay a separate water pipeline for educational institutions and establishments in the area. Work on this separate pipeline will start as soon as the proposal gets financial sanction from the government,” said Borkar.
