PANAJI
In a shocking case, a police sub-inspector attached to the Panaji police station Utkrantrao Desai faked filing chargesheets in the courts in over a dozen cases going to the extent of forging court documents.
Desai was on Friday suspended following orders by Director General of Police (DGP) Indra Dev Shukla, IAS, and a departmental enquiry has been instituted in the matter.
Desai, through his tenure at the Panaji police station, had registered nearly two dozen FIRs and was the investigating officer. However, although he had gone through the process of preparing chargesheets, in at least 15 cases he failed to file them before the relevant criminal courts and also destroyed some supporting documents allegedly to help the accused persons in these cases.
A top police official said, the cases have since been transferred to the Crime Branch to be investigated afresh and further process of prosecution.
Within the police department, however, Desai misled his higher-ups by falsely claiming that chargesheets in those cases were filed and had also forged court numbers.
Desai's suspension takes immediate effect, pending the departmental enquiry which has already commenced.
