PANAJI
Three days after the matter was first reported to them, the Panaji police on Thursday registered a first information report (FIR) in the quaint case of residents of a plush apartment-building in Taleigao-Dona Paula facing nocturnal break-ins and bedroom invasions by a mysterious, semi-nude intruder since mid-June.
The police in the FIR have booked the ‘unknown culprit’ for offences under section 457 (lurking house trespass or house breaking at night), section 380 (theft) and section 354C (voyeurism) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
A resident couple of ‘Adwalpalkar Horizon’ had filed a complaint with the Panaji police on Monday after they found the mystery man inside their bedroom at around 3.30 am.
Police did not convert the complaint into FIR on the pretext that the complainant couple had not reported any theft.
However, two days later on Wednesday, residents of at least nine apartments in the building followed up with a joint complaint narrating multiple break-ins, theft of cash and of missing women’s under-garments from their apartments between June 15 and September 2.
Yet the police dithered booking the FIR.
On Thursday, however, the police finally registered the FIR after The Goan reported the story of the dark-skinned culprit that was haunting the residents for over two months by suddenly popping up in their bedrooms in the dead of the night between 3.30 am and 4.00 am.
The residents said they suspect him to be entering from windows in their halls and kitchens and on the two occasions that he was discovered by the residents when they suddenly woke up at that unearthly hour, the ghostly figure swiftly jumped out of the same windows he had entered the flats through and escaped.
The residents also claimed in their complaint that the tormentor was only breaking into homes which had women occupants and that he only robs cash and women’s under-garments.
Almost every flat in the ‘A-Block’ of the complex, has been broken into by the mystery man, the residents have claimed in their joint complaint.
