Fatorda police cracked the whip on sausage and pork sellers at the old market, besides fish and fruit vendors in the SGPDA market and cleared vendors from the Ravindra Bhavan road on Wednesday.
With the SGPDA, besides the New market and Gandhi markets closed for business as per the district Collector’s order on lockdown, vendors used to sell pork and sausages at the old market, while fish and fruit vendors were found outside the PDA market during the last few days.
Wednesday, however, saw the men-in-uniform from the Fatorda police station descending at the old market to order the closure of meat and sausages stalls.
Defending the decision, Fatorda police station in-charge, PI Kapil Nayak informed that people used to crowd near the sausage and meat stalls at the Old market in violation of the social distancing norms.
He further claimed that the crowd used to spill on the main road, resulting in traffic congestion. “Since there was no social distancing maintained at the stalls and the overcrowding caused traffic congestion, the police decided to shut down the stalls on Wednesday”, he said.
The police team later descended around the SGPDA market and the Ravindrabhavan traffic circle to clear the unauthorized vendors.
