MARGAO
Goa police on early Sunday morning cracked a whip on the illegal sale of wholesale fish on the Western bypass.
After the police came down heavily on the wholesale fish activity during the last two days, Sunday saw the unscrupulous fish traders making good their escape by leaving behind their trucks and fish behind after police descended on the bypass.
This is the first time that the traders fled to escape police action.
The SGPDA had last week shut down the wholesale fish market in view of the surge in Covid cases in the state.
However, some of the unscrupulous traders have been importing fish from across the Maharashtra border to Margao and selling it along the wholesale fish market road, defeating the very purpose of closing down the market.
On Saturday, the fish traders hoodwinked the police and shifted their activity from the wholesale market road to the western bypass on the Nuvem-Verna stretch.
While the Colva and Fatorda police ensured that fish vehicles do not unload any fish along the wholesale fish market road, some of the fish traders shifted their business activity on the western bypass to escape the whip launched by the police.
Though the wholesale fish market has been closed for business till May 10 in view of the surge in Covid cases, some of the traders importing fish from Maharashtra have been engaged in the business in the last couple of days.
