If you find someone shooting photos while you are riding or driving then don’t panic. It’s a policeman who is assigned duty to monitor traffic violations in bid to enforce traffic discipline among motorists in Mapusa sub-division.
Plain-clothes policemen have been tasked to move around with smartphones and shoot photos of all those riders/drivers who violate traffic rules and thereafter report the violations to the respective police stations.
Mapusa, Anjuna and Colvale Police Stations come under the Mapusa sub-division.
Mapusa SDPO, Jivba Dalvi informed that the decision was taken in bid to bring down the rate of accidents happening in the State.
“Quite often, we find people violating the Motor Vehicle Act by not wearing helmet, travelling triple seat, not wearing seat belts etc and whenever they see a policeman in uniform they either try to overspeed or take other route to escape punishment. Now, policemen in civil dress will move around on different streets and shoot pictures of traffic violators which will be later forwarded to the Notice Branch DySP Traffic, Panaji to issue notice. Challans will then be dispatched to the violators through post,” Dalvi said.
The exercise was started from Tuesday and a total of 145 violators were intercepted on day one from the three police stations.
According to Mapusa SDPO, five policemen in plain-clothes from each of the Mapusa, Anjuna and Colvale police stations will move around in different areas to monitor and intercept traffic violations on their phones.
He also said that regular booking of challan for violating Motor Vehicle Act by uniform police will also continue simultaneously.
“Hopefully people will behave and it will have a deterrent effect on them,” Dalvi said.
