The Goa police was left red-faced after a driver of a Police Control Room vehicle was caught on the wrong foot after an alchometer test revealed that he had consumed 260 ml of liquor.
Margao PI Kapil Nayak told The Goan that the driver will be booked and arrested under Section 34 of the Indian Police Act.
The incident occurred at Aquem late Sunday evening when the police control van dashed against the rear side of a private car parked alongside the road. As the accident caught the attention of the people around, given that the policeman was driving the vehicle, the driver attributed the accident to break failure.
Citizens, however, disputed the claim. They pointed out that the police driver was driving the vehicle under the influence of liquor. Attempts to work out a compromise between the driver and the private car owner failed as citizens led by Aquem-Baixo Sarpanch Siddesh Bhagat demanded that the police conduct an alcohometer test on the police driver.
The test which was later conducted at the spot in full public view confirmed that the driver had consumed 260 ml of liquor.
Sarpanch Siddesh Bhagat said the citizens had insisted on an alcohometer test on the police driver to prove that he was driving under the influence of liquor. “The police department often give sermons to the public not to drink and drive. The Aquem incident showed that the policemen does not put into practice what they preach’, Siddesh added.
Late in the evening, Margao PI Kapil Nayak said the driver Vishnu Naik has been placed under suspension after he was booked under the provision of the IPC and under section 185 of the MV Act.
