Mounting pressure on the striking tourist taxi operators to fall in line or face action, the Goa police also joined the bandwagon by issuing notices to the taxi operators to desist from committing any cognizable offences during the ongoing agitation.
Police stations in Salcete have warned the striking operators that any commission of cognizable offence may result in the cancellation of their driving licences, registration certificate of vehicles and adverse record for police clearance certificate.
Invoking Section 149 of the Criminal Procedure Code, Margao police station in-charge PI Tushar Lotlikar stated in his notice that he has credible belief and information that the taxi drivers will involve themselves, their friends and colleagues in the commission of cognizable offences by way of preventing/threatening/obstructing the taxi drivers, taxi owners, rent-a-car operators who are legally operating their trade.
They have been warned to desist from getting involved directly or indirectly or through any other means in the commission of any cognizable offence.
While police personnel attached to the Margao police station have fanned out to various areas of the city to serve the notices on the striking operators, the Colva police have also launched a massive exercise along the coastal belt to serve the notices on the individual taxi operators.
Colva police station in-charge, PI Rahul Parab, informed that personnel have been fanned out to various villages in the police station jurisdiction to serve the notices on the individual taxi operators. “Today, we have served the notices under section 149 of the CrPC on around 34 taxi owners and operators. The exercise has just begun and will continue till the taxi operators are all served the notices individually,” PI Parab added.
