The Canacona Fire Services was on its toes since Tuesday morning, attending to over 15 incidents of tree falling on houses and roads in different parts of Canacona taluka.
As many as nine houses were damaged in different parts of the taluka after incessant rains accompanied by strong winds brought down several trees. Houses were damaged at Bhupar (Gaondongrim), Padi (Near Panchayat), Molorem-Mestawada (Khola), Patnem and Kindlem (Canacona municipality), Chiplem (Poinguinim), Shristhal and Palolem.
Trees were also uprooted in different parts and the fire services cleared the fallen trees from the roads and houses.
Meanwhile, all rivers in Canacona continued to flow over the danger mark for the third day, as seasonal rains crossed 2335 mm as on 6 pm on Tuesday. The Chapoli dam recorded a water level of 38.50 RL (Reduced Level), barely 0.25 RL below its full capacity.
While fire services personnel rushed to attend calls from all over the taluka and even beyond, civic responsibility was also on display when Loliem-Polem Sarpanch Shailesh Pagui along with panchas rushed to Pedem and cleared a tree which fell and blocked a village road.
Similarly, Palolem councillor Dayanand Pagui was among the first to rush as early as 5 am when a coconut tree collapsed on the house of one Foki Ganesh Pagi. The councillor then contacted the Directorate of Municipal Administration (DMA) and sought the services of workmen to help the family in distress to remove the fallen coconut tree.
Meanwhile, seven electricity poles of the main 33-KV supply line were damaged on Tuesday, disrupting power supply in many parts of the taluka.
The electricity staff did their best to restore power supply to the Taluka by working against all odds in the dense forest areas of Padi, through which the 33-KV supply line from Cuncolim to Canacona passes through.
According to electricity sources, seven poles were damaged and alignment of 33-KV incoming line of Circuit No 10 from Cuncolim to Canacona was thrown on the ground.
Only one 33-KV incoming Circuit No 13 is functioning at Canacona, which is presently servicing the entire Canacona Taluka, while the 33-KV Circuit No 12 underground is down with a cable fault, informed Canacona Assistant Executive Engineer Vinayak Mhalshekar.
Mhalshekar along with his team personally supervised the restoration works in the affected areas.
