BICHOLIM

With heavy rains continuing to affect life and property in Bicholim taluka, excess water was released from the Tillari dam and a general alert was sounded to people residing along the river banks.

Residents in Sal, Punarvasan, Mencurem and surrounding areas along the riverbanks have been alerted, even as heavy rains flooded several parts of Sakhali, Virdi, Sal, Bicholim, Mayem and other areas.

Incidentally, the pumping station on the riverbanks at Sal was flooded and concerns were raised about the huge pumps at the station.

“We are taking care of the pumps, but the water level has risen sharply,” said WRD engineer K P Naik.

Meanwhile, water flooded the market area in Sakhali and several shops were inundated despite efforts by the WRD to pump out water during a 24-hour operation.

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday morning visited the flood-affected areas in Sakhali, Amona, Virdi, Bicholim and other parts and reviewed the situation.

“The government will offer all possible help to those who have suffered losses due to the natural calamity,”  he said and added, “I have instructed the officials to submit full report after assessment, to release the financial assistance to the families affected by

the flooding.”
