Is the Goa police adequately sensitized to deal with foreign woman nationals in distress and in need of assistance? It doesn't appear so, if one goes through this story.
A woman foreign national, believed to be hailing from UK-Ireland, was dropped outside the Margao police headquarters on Wednesday as she was apparently seeking assistance from the foreigners' branch.
The woman appeared in distress as she could not walk with her swollen legs, but she was apparently told at the entrance of the headquarters by a policeman that the foreigner's branch is not located in the district headquarters.
Left with no option, the woman returned back on the pavement outside the headquarters where she had kept her luggage. She was spotted by a group of scribes, who saw her in distress. What's shocking to note is that the lady police remained unmoved when a lady scribe went inside to draw their attention to the plight of the lady. They told the scribe to get the foreign national inside the police station despite the fact that she could not walk properly with the swollen legs.
At this juncture, one of the scribes called up the district police chief, Arvind Gawas, who was seated upstairs in the district headquarters to explain the plight of the foreign national and the apathy and indifference shown by
the police.
It was only after the intervention of SP Gawas that that a lady police constable came outside and helped the foreign national to walk
inside the police station with the luggage.
After she narrated her story, Margao Police station in-charge, PI Kapil Nayak, arranged a police vehicle to drop the woman to Patnem, Canacona, where she was putting up for the last few days.
