Smiles lit the faces of farmers of Nova Khazan Tenants Association Corjuem-Curtorim as they netted a bumper catch of freshwater fish on Sunday.
Freshwater fish such as shevtte, kilapi, khall, tiger prawns, besides other varieties of fish, which had entered the fields during the rains, were netted by the farmers.
“The elated farmers pointed out that the fish netted today had all entered the fields during the high tide. “We did not even put the feed for the fish to grow,” informed Rui Menezes.
He pointed out that a variety of fish such as shevtee, tiger prawns, chonak, horchee, etc were netted by the farmers. “We have carried out the work of maintenance and strengthening of the bandh this time. Since the water did not get dry, a pre-condition for cultivating khazan land, we did not cultivate the fields last time. Next year, the farmers will cultivate the khazan fields,” he said.
Rui added: “The income earned through the sale of the freshwater fish is later used to carry out work on the bandh and is also distributed amongst the farmers.”
