A corroded lamp pole at the SGPDA market in Margao came crashing down on a car parked along the road leading to the retail market on Wednesday, disrupting vehicular traffic for some time.
The pole collapsed after its heavily corroded base gave way, raising fresh concerns over the condition and maintenance of lamp poles installed across the city. The incident has once again highlighted the potential safety risks posed by ageing public infrastructure.

Fortunately, no pedestrians or motorists were passing through the area when the pole fell, averting a serious mishap. The parked car, however, sustained damage.
Personnel from the Margao Fire and Emergency Services, along with officials of the Power department, rushed to the spot and removed the fallen pole, following which normal traffic movement in the market was restored.
The collapse has sparked concerns among residents and traders, who have called for an immediate inspection of lamp poles across the city to prevent similar incidents in the future.
