Cortalim Congress Block President Peter D’Souza has condemned the attack on the Kaushal family at Zuarinagar, assuring all support to the police in bringing the culprits to justice.
He has also admitted that the alleged involvement of a Congress member in the incident has raised serious questions within the party.
Speaking on Friday morning, D’Souza said he had visited the victim family at the hospital and extended his support to them. He said the attack was condemnable and that those responsible should be brought to book.
However, the Congress leader also raised concerns after BJP protesters displayed posters allegedly depicting a Congress member as being involved in the attack. D’Souza said he was unaware of the induction of the person concerned into the party’s youth wing and would take up the matter with the state leadership.
“I was not aware of this induction. I will raise the issue with GPCC president Girish Chodankar and Youth Congress president Archit Naik and seek appropriate action,” D’Souza said.
He said the party leadership would be apprised of the circumstances surrounding the alleged induction and the concerns arising from the incident. He also said action should be sought against the person accused of involvement in the attack, as well as the local leader who had reportedly inducted him into the Youth Congress.
The development puts the spotlight on the Congress organisation in Cortalim, with its block president now seeking clarity from the state leadership over the alleged association of a party member with the incident.
D’Souza’s statement comes amid protests over the assault on the Kaushal family, with the incident triggering political exchanges in the area.
