Urges Sancoale panchayat to resolve Zorint drainage issue

Cortalim MLA Anton Vas launching the works for hot-mixing of internal roads worth Rs 4.5 crore at Thana junction in the presence of ZP member Merciana Vas, Cortalim sarpanch Ujwala Naik, panch members and residents.
Cortalim MLA Anton Vas on Wednesday launched the works on hot-mixing of internal roads worth Rs 4.5 crore at Thana junction in the presence of ZP member Merciana Vas, Cortalim sarpanch Ujwala Naik, panch members and residents.
Speaking at the launch, Vas said the works would cover all damaged and pothole-ridden roads in Thana. “We are launching the hot-mixing works of all internal roads at an estimated cost of Rs 4.5 crore, which will address all potholes in this area. The work will commence in a few days since the hot mix plants have not yet started operations. However, we decided to launch the works now so that the model code of conduct for the upcoming ZP elections does not delay them,” he said.
Vas added that similar works in Sancoale, worth Rs 10 crore, would begin soon, along with those in Quelossim, while works in Velsao were already underway. “We regret that these works could not be taken up earlier due to the rains,” he said.
The MLA also urged the Sancoale panchayat to pass a resolution to tackle the long-pending drainage issue at Zorint. “The road at Zorint has been a long-standing problem, existing even before I became MLA. The main issue is the lack of drainage due to encroachments, which causes the hot-mix layer to wash away every monsoon. The opposition then blames me for poor road conditions, but the real issue is structural,” Vas said.
He appealed for joint action to find a lasting solution. “I request the Sancoale panchayat to take a resolution to clear the encroachments and create a proper drainage system. Once they pass the resolution, I will take it up with the government. We can meet and discuss the issue together, or the panchayat can send me their proposal so that I can take it up with the PWD Minister Digambar Kamat. The absence of drainage causes road erosion despite repeated hot-mixing, and only close coordination between the panchayat and the MLA can bring a permanent solution,” Vas said.
He added that he was ready to jointly present the issue before the Chief Minister and the PWD Minister to ensure that the Zorint road is finally repaired with a durable and long-term plan.
