Heavy rains and strong winds caused a mudslide near the Cortalim circle on Monday afternoon, causing a massive traffic jam in the area.
Motorists witnessed mud and stones falling off a roadside hillock and began moving cautiously along the route, which led to a massive
traffic jam.
Teams from the Goa Police and Vasco Traffic Cell rushed to the site and took charge of the situation in a bid to manage and regulate the huge queue of vehicles.
To make the situation worse, many two-wheelers jumped the queue and caused bottlenecks at the junctions.
Chaos prevailed at the Cortalim circle as traffic movement slowed down and heavy showers further hindered traffic movement along all roads leading to the Cortalim and Agassaim junctions.
According to sources, a one-km route from the Cortalim circle to the Agassaim bypass junction took as long as an hour, leaving motorists fuming over the delay.
“The PWD is taking it easy. They have placed some stone blocks along the road to double up as a barrier. The sight of loose mud falling off a hillock is scary. The government is not bothered about traffic safety,” complained a motorist, Ramesh Prabhu.
Another angry motorist, Tony D’Cruz raised several questions: “When will the government step in? Who are they waiting for? Do they want a tragedy to occur and then react?” “The traffic police are doing a great job, but how long can motorists risk their lives, while politicians are busy in the assembly? Why is the contractor given so much freedom and why is he not taken to task?”
