Traffic on the Quepem-Margao road was diverted via Chandor as water from the Kushawati river started rising on Monday evening due to heavy rains in the last two days.
By evening the main road was submerged and water was also flowing over the Paroda-Avedem bridge. This is the third time this monsoon that traffic has been diverted due to the submerged road at Paroda.
Almost every year, the road at Paroda gets submerged and disrupts traffic movement. Traffic is then diverted via the narrow road at Chandor, causing hardships to people, especially students going to Margao.
On July 9, 2013, then CM late Manohar Parrikar had inspected the site between Karali and Paroda which gets submerged and had assured villagers that the road from Karali would be raised. He had also said a new bridge near the existing Paroda-Avedem bridge would be built within six months. Till date, the government has not taken any steps to solve this problem.
Being the first Monday of Shrawan, devotees from Margao who visit Damodar temple at Zambaulim were severely affected and so were the devotees from Quepem going to Chandreshwar temple atop the Paroda hill.
There has been a long-pending demand from residents of Paroda and Quepem for an alternate route to avoid this recurring flood situation.
