The Cortalim Panchayat on Tuesday warned of strict action against roadside fish vendors which could include confiscation of goods.
Sarpanch Senia Pereira said the panchayat had undertaken a drive to approach roadside fish vendors and request them to move to the market complex to sell fish.
“Most of them have agreed to do so and we have now seen a decline in roadside vendors by over 70 percent. I want to appeal to the others to move to the market complex and sell fish because roadside fish selling leads to traffic congestion and can ultimately lead to accidents.”
“The Panchayat will now take strict action and we have taken a resolution wherein all panch members have agreed to start confiscating fish from roadside vendors if anyone indulges in operating from roadside,” said Pereira.
Dy Sarpanch Divya Raikar appealed to vendors to shift to the market to sell their produce.
“We have such a beautiful market set up here and I appeal to vendors to stop selling by the roadside and operate their business from the market,” said Raikar.
“We want to make the market functional and this is a better option instead of dangerously selling from roadsides where KTC buses are moving along the road, people are parking haphazardly and small children are moving to and from schools.”
“Once vendors move to the market, the place will be fully functional and the panchayat can also generate revenue which can be used for public works,” said Raikar.
