Stating that illegal landfilling activity was taking place in his ward along the NH66, Mapusa councillor Prakash Bhivshet on Thursday made a passionate appeal for joint inspection of the landfilling in Gaunsavaddo, Mapusa.Bhivshet also said that he had made several attempts to highlight the issue of landfilling in the past but all his appeals fell on deaf ears.
“The Mapusa Municipal Council chairperson and the chief officer should conduct a joint inspection of the illegal landfilling taking place in my ward 20 along the NH66. Several people have raised concern about the illegal activity and demanded action in the matter,” Bhivshet said, raising the issue in the council meeting.
He said people were worried that unscrupulous elements were carrying illegal activity under the cover of darkness and setting up businesses on the agricultural land.
The Goan had reported about the spurt in illegal landfilling and business activities in the fields adjacent to the National Highway 66 at Gaunsavaddo in Mapusa.
The illegal landfilling activity had led to destruction of mangroves in the area which act as natural buffers against erosion and flooding.
Recently, the Deputy Collector of Bardez conducted an inspection of illegal landfilling in the area and directed stopping of the activity.
In the past, Bhivshet had blamed the municipality and its engineering department for issuing licences to some projects by keeping him in the dark.
