Couple killed in Porvorim road mishap

PORVORIM: A trip to attend a zatra in Khandola ended in tragedy when a couple from Duler-Mapusa was killed while their son was injured in a road mishap near the Nexa showroom at Porvorim in the wee hours of Saturday.
Porvorim Police said the mishap took place as Jairam Mandrekar (62), a retired banker, his wife Ratan (57), an employee with the Mapusa Urban Cooperative Bank at Panaji, and one of their two sons, Ankit, were returning home from Khandola in their car (GA-03-P-2977).
As they reached near the Nexa showroom at Porvorim around 4 am, a collision took place between their car and an oncoming container (MH-04-FD-7973), which was proceeding to Verna.
The impact was so severe that the front portion of the car was fully damaged.
Jairam and Ratan were grievously injuries while Ankit sustained minor injuries.
They were shifted to the Goa Medical College Hospial at Bamoblim, where Jairam and Ratan were declared on admission while Ankit was discharged after treatment.
Police said the Mandrekar family had gone to Khandola to attend a zatra and were returning home when the mishap took place.
The bodies of the deceased were later handed over to relatives and the final rites were conducted at Dattawadi-Mapusa on Saturday evening.
Porvorim police have arrested the container driver, Shamrao Ingavle, on charges of rash and negligent driving and PSI Pratik Bhat is investigating the case.
