MARGAO
Even as Fomento filed an affidavit on Saturday stating that the Sonsodo waste treatment plant is choked and will be difficult to run if the Margao Municipal Council does not cart away the waste from the plant, the South Goa District Court has suggested that the government initiate negotiations to resolve the issue amicably in the next 10 days.
While suggesting that the government may explore the possibility of entering into negotiations to resolve the Sonsodo imbroglio in the next 10 days, the court has fixed January 21 as the date for the final hearing in the matter.
At the hearing on Saturday, Fomento legal counsel submitted a report before the court from an authorized laboratory stating that hardly 10 per cent of the waste lying inside the waste treatment plant was inert.
While stating that the balance waste has turned out to be mixed waste, Fomento filed an affidavit stating that unless the MMC carts away the mixed or excluded waste immediately, the company will not be in a position to run the plant after 8-10 days.
MMC lawyer, Adv S Padiyar, however, submitted before the court that the report from the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) on the nature of the waste lying inside the plant is still awaited and is expected to come within a week.
The GSPCB, which was directed by the district court to collect samples from the waste treatment plant and come out with the finding whether the waste is excluded or inert, is expected to file a detailed report before the court at the next date of hearing on January 21.
The court is expected to decide on the question of carting away the waste lying inside the plant after going through the report from the authorised laboratory and the GSPCB.
While the court has adjourned the matter to January 21, Fomento has maintained that over a thousand tonnes of mixed waste, mostly excluded waste, is lying inside the plant and that it is the responsibility of the MMC to cart IT away.
