Margao Municipal Council officials are keeping their fingers crossed to know the nature of the 900 tonnes waste lying inside the Sonsodo waste treatment plant.
Test on the samples of the waste in an authorized laboratory has stated that mostly excluded or mixed waste is lying inside the plant.
MMC officials are worried that a similar report from the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) may put the civic body in a tight spot as it will not only be required to cart away the excluded waste from the plant, but will throw up questions on the ongoing door-to-door waste segregation exercise carried out by the municipality by spending lakhs of rupees.
While the private authorized laboratory has certified that hardly 10 per cent of the 900 tonnes waste lying inside the treatment plant is inert, the question that remains unanswered is how come the balance waste, all excluded and mixed, has found its way in the treatment plant given that the civic body spends a whopping Rs 35 odd lakh every month on the door-to-door waste contractors.
The Shadow Council of Margao was quick to raise eyebrows over the spending by the Margao Municipal Council after Fomento placed the report from the authorized laboratory
in the district court on Saturday.
“On one hand, the council spends almost Rs 35 lakh per month on the two contractors to collect segregated waste. And on the other hand, the waste that has reached the plant is now claimed to be excluded or mixed waste,” Shadow Council of Margao Convenor Savio Coutinho said.
He demanded to know whether the civic body maintains a check on the contractors engaged by it for the segregation of the daily waste.
